Koh Samui is the biggest destination for diving

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Pha-Ngan all have numerous professional PADI-qualified dive companies offering their services.

Most have ex-pat dive-masters with staff and crew who are well trained in English and knowledgeable in all aspects of dive-safety procedures. Generally speaking, there’s very little difference in price between most operators.

Indeed, it’s not uncommon for two or three different dive companies to share the same boat on occasions.

Expect to pay around Bt.4500 for a day dive trip to one of the popular sites. A PADI open-water dive course usually cots something in the region of Bt.17.000, depending on how many dives are included.

The more advance courses, including PADI instructor’s training, are also available. Taking into account the wide range of accomodation available here, Thailand must be one of the most affordable and pleasurable places in the world to learn to dive. Not least, becaused of the invitingly warm and stunningly beautiful conditions. All the islands here on the east coast have easily accessible local dive sites. And range from simple, shallow, beginners’ dives, to the highly advanced and adventurous- enough to satisfy even the most thrill-seeking divers.

Samui Marathon set

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

The Samui Island Marathon, the most lucrative running event in Thailand, will be held on the resort island on September 9, organisers said yesterday.

At stake is the Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Cup and a total purse of 3 million baht.

The event is jointly organised by Bangkok Airways, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and local authorities.

Bangkok Airways president Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth said this is the first time that the airline has organised a major marathon event on the island.

“We are proud to receive the trophy from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn,” he said.

“The total prize money of 3 million baht makes it the biggest marathon event in Thailand.

“We are confident that the Samui Island Marathon will put Samui on the map of major sporting events and that it will also help to boost the island’s tourism.”

TAT board chairman Wichai Srikwan said the event will help encourage Thai and foreign tourists to travel to the island.

Bangkok Airways vice president M.L. Nandhika Varavarn said the organisers expect over 3,000 participants.

Apart from the marathon there will be competitions over shorter distances for men and women. Bangkok Airways is offering special fares to runners in the event.

Thailand Punches Through to New Highs

Monday, August 30th, 2010

With hotel occupancy in the dumps at 20%-30%, and parts of downtown Bangkok still in ruins from the May riots, you would think the call to buy Thailand (TWD), (TF) two months ago was a complete bust.

You would be wrong. Since then, the Thai ETF has tacked on an amazing 20%, the Thai Capital Fund is up 24%, and the Thai Baht has strengthened, making it one of the top performing stock markets of 2010. Even with the collapse of tourism, GDP is expected to come in at a healthy 6% this year, a figure American economists would kill for.

The country’s robust manufacturing sector, which accounts for 66% of Thai GDP, versus only 6% for tourism, continues to drive the country onward and upward. Think of Thailand as China, with the infrastructure already built out. Ford Motors (F) has announced the construction of a $450 million plant to build the Focus, while Nissan (NSANY) says it will assemble its compact. Toyota (TM) and GM are expected to follow suit with the expansion of existing facilities.

Carl Van Horne, then the chief investment officer of JP Morgan, once taught me a rule that I have found incredibly useful: follow the direct investment; the stocks markets always play catch up. Thailand continues to be a place where international investors want to be. Buy on dips, if we get any.
